چکیده

Using the axioms of “priority” and “solidarity” (solidarity in the influences of the changes in population or resources on the original members) in a variable and potentially infinite population model, Moreno-Ternero and Roemer (2006) establish an axiomatic characterization of index-egalitarian rules. We show that similar characterization results can be established in a fixed and finite population model, when their solidarity is replaced with the axiom of agreement. This axiom requires that when there is a change in agents’ characteristics (output functions) or total resources, all agents who remain unchanged should be influenced in the same direction: all unchanged agents get more, all get less, or all get the same amount as before. We also show that agreement can be replaced with the combination of resource monotonicity and separability and that the priority axiom in Moreno-Ternero and Roemer (2006) can be replaced with an alternative formalization of Parfit’s priority view.

A common ground for resource and welfare egalitarianism

Resource egalitarianism and welfare egalitarianism are two focal conceptions of distributive justice. We show in this paper that they share a solid common ground. To do so, we analyze a simple model of resource allocation in which agents’ abilities (to transform the resource into an interpersonally comparable outcome) and starting points may differ. Both conceptions of egalitarianism are natura...

A-potential function and a non-cooperative foundation for the Solidarity value

Marginanism and egalitarianism are two main standpoints in economics. The Shapley value has been characterized in many ways from the view of marginalism. In this paper, we characterize the Solidarity value with respect to the egalitarianism by three approaches applied to the Shapley value. We introduce a revised potential function and deduce the recursive formula of the Solidarity value. It is ...

Luck Egalitarianism and Political Solidarity

Luck egalitarianism — the theory that makes individual responsibility central to distributive justice, so that bad luck underwrites a more compelling case for redistribution than do the bad choices of the disadvantaged — has recently come under a sustained attack from critics who are deeply committed to the broader struggle for equality. These egalitarian critics object, first, that luck egalit...

Equality and Priority

This article argues that, contrary to the received view, prioritarianism and egalitarianism are not jointly incompatible theories in normative ethics. By introducing a distinction between weighing and aggregating, the authors show that the seemingly conflicting intuitions underlying prioritarianism and egalitarianism are consistent. The upshot is a combined position, equality-prioritarianism, w...

Egalitarianism and Animals

The moral consideration of nonhuman animals and the critique of speciesism have been defended by appeal to a variety of ethical theories. One of the main approaches in moral and political philosophy today from which to launch such a defense is egalitarianism, which is the view that we should aim at favoring the worse off by reducing inequality. This paper explains what egalitarianism is and sho...
